Portugal has once again solidified its reputation as a top-tier golfing haven, clinching the prestigious title of ‘World’s Best Golf Destination 2024’ at the 11th annual World Golf Awards held in Madeira.

The glamourous event brought together global golf industry leaders and enthusiasts to celebrate excellence in golf tourism and hospitality.

Madeira hosts World Golf Awards

The awards ceremony, hosted at the Savoy Palace in Madeira on November 22, marked the end of a two-day event showcasing the finest golf courses. Chris Frost, managing director of the World Golf Awards, praised Madeira as a “magnificent host” for this global gathering, which recognised top-tier courses, clubs, and facilities worldwide.

The island of Madeira had a fantastic evening, securing the title of ‘World’s Best Emerging Golf Destination 2024’. The region’s golf offerings were also highlighted with several individual accolades:

  • Santo da Serra Golf Course received dual honours for the ‘World’s Best Par 3 Hole’ and the ‘World’s Best Sustainable Water Capture System’.
  • Palheiro Golf, known for its breathtaking views of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean, was recognised as the ‘World’s Best Panoramic Clubhouse’.

Eduardo Jesus, Madeira’s regional secretary for Economy, Tourism and Culture, hailed the awards as “a reward for the work that has been carried out in favour of the development, promotion, and communication of this sport.”

He further emphasised Madeira’s commitment to golf tourism, noting the region’s three exceptional courses and plans for a fourth on the island’s western tip.

Portugal shines in World Golf Awards

In addition to Madeira’s accolades, Portugal celebrated a historic win as Terras da Comporta, located on the Alentejo Coast, was named the ‘World’s Best Golf Course 2024’. The venue’s unique blend of natural beauty and challenging design captivated voters.

Other notable European winners included:

  • ‘World’s Best Golf Hotel’: Trump Turnberry, Scotland.
