Sentosa Golf Club became the first golf club to join the United Nation’s Sports for Climate Action Initiative on Friday (31 July). The initiative aims to support and guide sports organisations and their communities on a path to achieving the global climate goals set out by world leaders in the Paris Agreement.

The golf club, which was named World’s Best Golf Club by World Golf Awards last year, will commit to a set of five agreed principles and incorporating them into its club strategy, policies, and procedures, as well as communicating them to their wider sporting community within Singapore and other golf clubs around the world.

“We have already taken great strides with our sustainability programme in the last two years and are therefore extremely excited to be joining this initiative,” said Andrew Johnston, Sentosa Golf Club’s general manager and director of agronomy.

The club launched its #KeepItGreen campaign at the SMBC Singapore Open in January 2018, with environmental features implemented at the club such as creating its own bee colonies; using rechargeable lithium batteries in golf carts; and building a sustainable herb garden.

In January, the club also unveiled the GAME ON sustainability campaign to help golf clubs around the world to better prepare for climate change.

Other sporting organisations who have joined the initiative include baseball’s New York Yankees, football’s La Liga and tennis’ All England Lawn Tennis Club.

BJJ world champion Buchecha joins Evolve MMA

Evolve Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) academy announced on Friday (31 July) that 13-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) world champion Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida has joined its elite Fight Team.

Buchecha began his BJJ career training under current Evolve MMA Instructor, two-time world champion Teco Shinzato.

“After my long-awaited trip to teach a seminar at Evolve MMA in June 2019, it confirmed my desire to be part of the organisation because of the warm culture and good people,” he said in a media release.

“I also plan to share my BJJ knowledge with all students and athletes at Evolve MMA during my visits.”
